How to face summer with a beard (without giving up the charm)

The John Barber blog · Eleonora Boretti ·

Man with a beard enjoying the summer sun

Welcome to summer. Sun, heat, dips in the pool and, why not, a beard. Yes, you read that right: summer is not an excuse to shave, it is just a small extra challenge. One you can win with the right method, a few smart products and that touch of style that makes you unique. Here is a practical guide, no big words, full of concrete solutions and a conversational rhythm, in true John Barber style.

Sweat and beard: a complicated relationship

In summer you sweat. Full stop. And the beard, so comfortable under your nose all year round, turns into a sponge for sweat, sebum and residue. Sometimes it gets itchy or, worse, starts to smell. Nobody wants to hear “isn’t it hot with that beard?”

Here is what to do: after the shower, don’t just run your hand through it. Use a natural-bristle brush, boar bristle for instance, to remove dead skin and spread the oils better. Then apply a gentle shampoo, such as a sulphate-free beard wash, followed by a light balm. The finishing touch? A fresh oil, perhaps citrus or mint, that nourishes the beard and leaves a feeling of freshness without the greasy, hot-weather effect.

Guaranteed result: a cleaner beard, fresher skin, and no “isn’t it hot with that beard?” spoiling your day.

Sea and pool: the beard’s natural enemies

Anyone who goes to the beach or the pool knows it: salt and chlorine are destructive for facial hair. After a good swim, a beard can look like a dry ear of wheat. To avoid it, one gesture is enough: rinse your beard straight away with fresh water, even if you are only going back for lunch.

In the evening? Choose a specific shampoo, and I recommend a generous amount of balm: let it work for a few minutes. The balm helps repair the damage and bring the softness back. If you have time, pat dry with a soft towel, don’t rub. Finally, apply a drop of light oil to keep it hydrated.

That way your beard survives the water, and even looks more groomed when you get back.

Outdoors? Check your beard like a mini ranger

Do you spend your days outdoors? In the mountains, in tall grass, on dusty trails or under the trees? A beard can pick up sand, dust, insects or even the odd… curious guest.

It is not paranoia: after every outing, take two minutes to brush with a wide-tooth comb and then go over it with a finer one (or your fingers) to check for any intruder. If you find something suspicious, remove it carefully. If the hike was long or extreme, an evening shower dedicated to your beard can work wonders.

And above all, don’t underestimate hygiene. A clean beard is a safe beard… and nobody will ask whether you have trees in your face.

Barbecue, street food and barbecue on your face

Summer = food everywhere. Often quick, juicy, full of sauces and flavour. Great. But if you have a moustache or a short beard, you risk ending up with a greasy face and hair soaked in tomato juice or oil.

No-stress solution: always carry a small comb. Every few bites, give it a pass. Combing removes the biggest residue. If you have a tissue or a mini towel, patting works fine. When you are done, a spritz of light oil gets you back on track. A fresh scent and, importantly: no embarrassment by the third bite.

“Isn’t it too hot?”

That question is inevitable, at least once a day. And the answer? No need to tell anyone to be quiet. A disarming smile and a ready line are enough, for example: “It actually keeps me cooler than you think.” Or: “A wise beard is natural shade.”

The secret is not to be put off. A beard is not an accessory to take off because someone says so. If you look after it, cleaning it, moisturising it, shaping the edges, then your beard is already cool. And if you like it, the opinion of those who judge doesn’t count.

Make grooming a habit, not a chore

Summer doesn’t just mean heat, it also means unexpected events: matches, aperitivos, days out. And if the beard is messy or neglected, you look tired, tense, untidy.

But if you keep it fresh, with more frequent shampooing, a light oil after the bath and a comb every morning, you are ready for any selfie, drink or casual meeting. Plus, the simple act of combing and oiling becomes part of your daily routine: it is not just care, it is self-renewal.

A summer beard = character + awareness

Whoever shaves their beard because of the heat often does a favour… to those who want one without the effort. Choosing to keep it is not a sign of stubbornness, but of character: you decide how you feel your masculinity, not the thermometer.

That said, this only holds if the beard is in good shape. Sweaty, dry, messy? Better shave it off, seriously.

Summer is still yours (even if hairy)

Sun, heat, scents, water, friends. Yes, a beard can take it all. If we treat it well, it becomes even prouder under the sun. And the impact is double: you have style, and maybe she will give you a slightly bigger smile. Because a well-kept beard gives a sense of protection, maturity and a touch of rebellion.

So go on, don’t trade it for the heat. Even in July you can wear it with confidence. All it takes is a brush, shampoo, oil and a little irony. And to whoever asks “aren’t you hot?”, answer in style: “it’s my summer shield.”
