Movember: it's not just a moustache. It's a signal.

Movember event at John Barber

Every November some people grow a moustache for fun, some for fashion, some out of habit. But for many men – and for us at John Barber – Movember is much more than a question of style.

It is a reminder. It is an elegant (and slightly ironic) way to shine a light on men’s health, one of those things we tend to postpone, hide, downplay. But which sooner or later concerns us all.

So yes: the moustache becomes a symbol. Not to show off, but to say something. To talk about prevention, care, attention. Lightly, but also with awareness.

A bit of history: how did Movember begin?

It all started in Australia in 2003, when two friends decided, as a joke, to bring moustaches back into fashion. But from that provocation grew one of the most important awareness initiatives of the last twenty years.

Movember (a blend of “moustache” + “November”) is today a global movement that raises funds and spreads awareness about topics often left in the shadows:

  • prostate cancer
  • testicular cancer
  • mental health
  • suicide prevention

And it does so in a direct, engaging, down-to-earth way, as every conversation between real men should be.

Why a moustache? Because it gets noticed.

A moustache can’t be hidden. It shows. It changes your face. It gets people talking. And that is exactly the point: to get people talking about things that matter, starting from something simple.

Maybe someone asks you “Are you growing a moustache?” And you answer: “Yes, for Movember. To talk about prevention.” A few seconds. But in those few seconds, you have opened a door.

And if a real conversation starts from there, even better. Talking is already taking care.

Men’s health is not weakness. It is awareness.

Let’s be honest: for too many men “going to the doctor” is still a taboo. “I don’t have time”, “I don’t want to think about it”, “it’ll pass”.

But the truth is that looking after yourself isn’t for the weak. It is for men who are on the ball.

Because if you catch something in time, you deal with it. If you ignore it… you take a risk. And that risk, today, with the medicine we have, is often needless.

Movember is a chance to tell each other so. Among friends, among brothers, between fathers and sons. Even between strangers. With a moustache. With a chat. With a concrete gesture.

With the support of Olympus, which promotes Movember and this awareness project.

That is why this year we want to do our part.

On 25 November, at the Via Garibaldi 104 barbershop, we hosted an event that combined style, health and conviviality. A simple, direct, useful moment. And, as we like it, well done.

Here is what happened:

  • From 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, walk-in opening.
  • Free moustache shaping*: a touch-up done by the book, to honour your Movember in style.
  • A chat with a urologist: no lectures. Just an informal, useful dialogue, with no pressure.
  • Closing aperitif: because talking about health doesn’t mean giving up the pleasure of being together.

No obligation. No moralising. Just a space to stop for a moment, take care and share a message worth sharing. For you. And for those close to you.

It’s not just a moustache. It’s a clear message.

Movember reminds us that being a man today also means having the courage to listen to yourself. Not to neglect the signs. To make choices that do you good.

Also in the way we present ourselves. Even with a detail like a moustache.

So: if you like it, grow it. Make it noticed. Make it an opportunity. But above all: use November to remember (and remind others) that prevention is part of style.

And if you want to do it together with us, with Olympus, we were waiting for you in the shop.

*Because of the high number of registrations for the event, the free moustache shaping could not be guaranteed to everyone: priority was given to bookings in order of registration.

During the event, for the occasion, it was possible to book dedicated appointments with a special 30% discount.
